The Bed You Make
Chapter 37, concluded
Alexis Davis sighed and refilled her coffee cup from the machine on the far table. She'd been there nearly thirty minutes waiting for Sonny to conclude what seemed to be a very animated phone conversation. Having to wait while Sonny conducted other business was not an unusual occurrence, but Alexis was hard-pressed to recall when she'd last seen the Mob Boss so engaged in what was going on in the day-to-day running of what he swore was a legitimate business venture.
Apparently something had Sonny Corinthos very unhappy. He slammed down the phone and let loose a stream of profanity that sounded even more vicious spoken in Spanish. "Maybe we should reschedule this," Alexis suggested. The last thing she wanted was to be somewhere in the vicinity when things were happening in the organization. As it was, she hadn't quite figured out the words to tell Sonny that as District Attorney she would no longer be able to handle any of his business affairs. She couldn't take the chance of being tainted by that brush.
"We're not going to reschedule," Sonny declared. "In fact, you might be able to help me." The mobster pulled up a chair opposite Alexis. His gaze was tinged with suspicion. "You know something I need to know?"
Alexis was baffled by the question. Mentally she ran through the cases and investigations that were pending in her office. Nothing sprang to mind. "Can you give me a clue?" she hedged.
"Your brother. He's brought a lot of Russian muscle into my territory." The unspoken 'without my permission' hung in the air. "Is this about that thing with your nephew?"
"That thing ?" Alexis pointedly replied. "The decision that made me an outcast among my family?"
Sonny rolled his eyes. "Can we skip the drama, Alexis? I got more important stuff to deal with than your hurt feelings over your family! Is your brother planning a hit against my organization??"
Since spying the men near the Cassadine docks earlier, Alexis had done nothing but wonder what their purpose was in Port Charles. She had, frankly, considered that the men might be a part of some planned action on Stefan's part to deliver retribution to Sonny and his organization for their failed attempt to muscle away vital business contacts from Cassadine Industries. Especially since Marcus Taggert had informed Alexis that Stefan had suddenly picked up and gone to Greece. It would make sense for him to ensure Nikolas' safety by removing him far from the line of fire.
"My brother doesn't work that way." To her ears, the denial sounded weak. Alexis schooled her features to reveal nothing and tried again. "He has other ways of getting things done beside violence."
Sonny grunted. "You better hope that's the truth, Alexis," he threatened. "Find out what's going on with all the Russians," he instructed. "Or Jason will have to start asking questions his way."
