Strange Bedfellows
~ continued ~

“I accept your proposal.” Dara scanned Stefan’s expressionless face. “But then, I think you knew that I would.”

Stefan met her gaze unblinkingly.

“Thank you for not insulting my intelligence by pretending to be surprised,” Dara commented wryly.

“I have no desire to insult you, Miss Jensen. Indeed, it is my hope that we might be able to foster an amiable relationship throughout the course of our liaison.” His attention was caught by a quick wince that appeared upon her face. “You have doubts that such a feat is possible between us?”

Dara shook her head. “No, I am sure that you and I can manage to be civil to one another. It is just your use of the word ‘liaison’. Couldn’t you find another word to use?”

Stefan raised an eyebrow at her discomfort. “What exactly troubles you about that word, Miss Jensen? I cannot help but notice that you have not once, but twice voiced an objection to its use in our regard.”

No immediate response came to mind. Despite years of experience manipulating words to her benefit, Dara could not find a way to explain her unease. Not without revealing more of herself and her thoughts than she had to. How did she explain to Stefan Cassadine that her main – no, only – problem with the term was its sexual implications?

“Would the word ‘partnership’ be more to your liking?”

“Yes.” Dara was grateful for the interruption of her thoughts. “I do like the idea of partnership. With all its implications,” she added pointedly.

A small smile played about Stefan’s lips. “I get the feeling I shall not have much choice in that regard. When do you wish to commence?”

“Tomorrow.” The full scope of her decision hit her. Dara wasn’t sure that she had fully realized how her life was about to change until that very moment. “I have some things to take care of, but then…”

Stefan knew the things of which she spoke. “Shall I accompany you?”

“No,” Dara said quickly. “I need to do this alone.”

“Very well. I shall begin to put matters into motion.”
